Viqueens take silver in 9A tourney
The Community Viqueens opened the defense of their District 9A championship by defeating Middle Tennessee Christian 25-19, 25-12 and 25-23 to advance to the championship game against Eagleville on Tuesday night in Unionville.
Community broke open a tightly contested game with the score tied at 18-all in the first set to win going away to set the pace against the Lady Cougars.
Kelsey Dennis and Tiffany Davis led the way offensively with five aces apiece from the service line. Davis added five kills and six digs to her totals as well.
Hannah Busbee took control at the net with 14 kills and pitched in with 3 aces, while Kristen Ray contributed five kills, two aces and eight digs.
In the championship match, Community led 25-24 in the first set before succumbing 27-25 on two service points by Eagleville that hit the net and took a cruel roll to land in nowhere land on the Viqueen side of the net, letting the air out of a gathering cloud of momentum for the home squad.
It was a blow that the Purple and Gold were unable to recover from as the Lady Eagles closed out the match with 25-15 and 25-12 wins in the final two games.
Busbee led the Viqueen effort with 10 kills.
Tiffany Davis and Busbee were named to the All-District team.
The second place finish ensures the Viqueens a chance to compete in the regional tournament hosted by Eagleville beginning on Oct.18. Times and pairings will be announced.
