A Cascade High School senior died and another was critically injured in a single-car crash late Wednesday night on Benford Road, north of Shelbyville.

Kevin Andrew Hasty, 18, of Scott Lane, the driver, was dead at the scene of the crash, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Michael H. Marcoulier, 18, of Minkslide Road, was taken to nearby Heritage Medical Center and flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.

Scene of wreck

"He was eastbound on Benford Road in a straightaway," Trooper Chad McAnally said. "He crested a small rise in the roadway, applied his brakes and went into a skid. He ran off the roadway on the left side, traveled through a field and struck a tree on the driver's side."

McAnally's report said speed was a factor in the crash and safety belts were not in use.

Rescuers were unable to identify Hasty for some time, searching the area near the crash site for his billfold or other identifying documents.

Students grieve

Hasty and Marcoulier are both listed as seniors at Cascade, according to school records. No one at the school was available for comment this morning.

Bell Buckle United Methodist Church pastor David Adams was at Cascade this morning to support grieving students.

The school has been hit hard by student traffic fatalities in the past several years.
