Princesses, maids, aliens and time travel

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Shelbyville Parks & Recreation Department will again have its "Starlite Cinema" series of outdoor movies this summer at H.V. Griffin Park, with everything from drama to adventure.

The movies begin "at dark," according to Jennifer Swann of the parks department, so the time varies as the season progresses. In case of inclement weather, the movie will be held inside Shelbyville Recreation Center.

Those attending should bring their own chair or blanket for seating, and also food if desired, since there will be no concession service.

The schedule of movies:

June 1 -- "Joyful Noise," starring Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah in a comedy about a church choir entering a national competition.

June 15 -- "Enchanted," starring Amy Adams, which imagines what would happen if an animated Disney princess found her way into the real world.

June 29 -- "Back to the Future," the beloved 1980s time travel adventure-comedy starring Michael J. Fox

July 13 -- "Sweet Home Alabama," a romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon as an Alabama native who has to come to terms with her roots after running away to the big city.

July 2 -- "Lilo & Stitch," Disney animated fun about an alien who finds himself in the Hawaiian islands. This movie will be the "Flick 'N Float," and will be shown at the outdoor pool.

Aug. 10 -- "The Help," the period drama about a white woman in the south who interviews black maids about their lives.
