Evelyn Joyce Cole, known as Joyce, of Bankston, Alabama passed away from pancreatic cancer on the 6th day of July, 2012 at age 79.
Joyce was born in 1932 in Bankston, Alabama to Alfred and Afrey Atkins. She was the third of three children. After graduating high school she attended nursing school at Carraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham and enjoyed a long career as a registered nurse, obtaining the position of Emergency Room Supervisor at Bedford County Hospital in Shelbyville, Tennessee; a job that suited her razor sharp wits and decisive but compassionate nature.
She was an avid craftswoman excelling at crochet and as a seamstress. The craft she enjoyed most was quilting. She was a member of American Quilters Society and her quilts and wallhangings are valued keepsakes as well as beautiful, award-winning works of art. She was a longstanding member of the congregation of the Freewill Baptist Church in Bankston, Ala.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Karen and Don Durham, Marietta, Georgia, and Susan Cole and K.N. King, Atlanta, Georgia, as well as her nephew Dwight and Gail Smith and family, sister-in-law Beatrice Atkins and family and niece MariLee Self and family. Her brother Dueward Atkins and sister Jessie Ann Smith have already found their heavenly home.
Visitation will be held at Nelson's Funeral Home, 3659 Highway 171 N., Fayette, Alabama on July 10, 2012 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Funeral services will follow at New Liberty Freewill Baptist Church, Bankston, Alabama at 2 p.m. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. at the church. Bro. Darren Pollard will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Mike Tomlin, Jackie Dozier, Eugene Aldridge, Ray Selman, Don Durham, Kim King. Honorary pallbearer will be: Dwight Smith.
