The 74th Annual Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration is just a little over a month away. I am proud to be associated with an event that literally identifies our community. The Walking Horse Industry and The Celebration set us apart from communities with similar size and population.
The Celebration (TWHNC) is governed by a 50 member group called the Celebration Association. The Association is composed of Bedford County residents and meets annually to discuss the yearly operations of the Celebration. The Association members do not receive any money for all of their efforts in assisting with Celebration events and activities throughout the year.
A more heavily involved group is the Celebration Board of Directors. These Board members are elected every year by the Association and meet monthly with the Celebration Chief Executive Officer. Additionally, the Board members are involved in many weekly committee meetings to evaluate the various aspects of day by day Celebration operations. This seven member Board does not and has never received any financial compensation from the Celebration. In fact, they even purchase their own box seats for the Celebration.
I am continually amazed at the time and effort the Celebration Board members spend without compensation. Their extraordinary commitment stems from their love of the Celebration, the community and the horse. I was surprised to learn that many people in our community believe these Board members are paid extravagant sums of money to sit on the Celebration Board. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Actually, they receive very little credit or applause from all of their efforts. Next time you see one of our Association or Board members, give them a little pat on the back for a job well done.
