Timothy F. Harwell has been named principal of Cascade High School, according to an announcement made by Bedford County schools superintendent Dr. Ray Butrum this morning.

Harwell began his career with Bedford County schools in 1999 at Harris Middle School as an eighth-grade American history teacher and served as assistant principal at Harris from 2005-2006. In 2006, Harwell was appointed the principal at Liberty where he remained through 2009. He became the first principal of Thomas Magnet School when it was established in 2009.

Harwell received his Bachelor of Arts with a major in history and minors in secondary education and political science from Middle Tennessee State University. He obtained his Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Trevecca Nazarene University.

"Cascade High School is a unique learning community with a tradition of excellence. I have the utmost confidence that Mr. Harwell will make a tremendous imprint on both the school and its stakeholders. His proven track record to transform a school environment is evidenced by what he has accomplished at Thomas Magnet School. Bedford County is fortunate to have Mr. Harwell in this leadership position," stated Butrum.

Former principal Sharon Edwards, who had held the position since 2007, announced her resignation last week after more than 30 years with the Bedford County Board of Education.

School officials said they plan to post the Thomas Magnet School principal position today.

The school year begins Monday, Aug. 6.
