Man up to your feet woes

Sunday, August 19, 2012

I woke up in the middle of the night with my foot caught in my sheet. I wasn't sure what had happened so I just rolled over and went back to sleep.

When I woke up the next morning I rolled the covers back and I found that I had rubbed a big hole in the bottom sheet on our bed. The hard calluses on my right heel had rubbed the material away and tore a hole big enough to swallow my size 12 foot.

When I showed my wife what had happened she suggested I go somewhere to get a pedicure.

Now, I would be the first to admit I have some nasty feet, dry and callused and desperately in need of help, but I have never had a pedicure and I usually don't show my feet to anyone but my podiatrist.

Years ago, when my daughter would ask for some spending money, I would tell her I would give her money if she would massage my feet. She would usually go running from the room screaming, "Noooo!"

But, Lynn convinced me that maybe a pedicure would be a good thing for my nasty tootsies. So, I went to a new nail spa that had opened here in town and told the man at the counter that I wanted a pedicure. He showed me a brochure and asked what kind of pedicure I wanted.

This was all new to me, so I went for the deluxe.

I was shown to a big leather chair with a Jacuzzi-like tub for my feet attached to it. The woman filled the tub while I took off my shoes and socks and rolled my pant legs up to my knees.

She told me to sit back in the chair and put my feet in the tub. I sat back and did what I was told. Soon, that chair was massaging my back and the jets in the tub were massaging my feet.

This was amazing! But, it got even better.

After my feet had soaked sufficiently, the woman took one of my feet and clipped my nails. She then told me to put it back in the water and she repeated that with the other foot. Then she worked on my calluses with some utensils.

After my feet soaked again (the whole time that chair was rubbing and pounding and beating on my back) the woman began to rub my feet and calves with a pink concoction of sugar and honey with a citrus smell.

She said this was intended to remove the dry skin. Whatever it was, it felt amazing!

Then she got up and came back with a big bowl of hot rocks, and she began to rub my calves and feet with these black stones and that also felt amazing!

I was wondering why I hadn't gotten a pedicure years before.

Then came the oil rub and then the lotion, and the chair was doing its thing, and the music was soothing, and the lights were low. And I was feeling amazing!

Then the woman got up again and came back with two clear plastic bags of a blue liquid swishing around. She said it was hot paraffin or wax. Then she had me put a foot in each of the bags, wrapped the bags close around my feet and wrapped my feet in hot towels.

Oh my goodness! That too was amazing!

When she was done with my pedicure, my feet were smooth and soft and the calluses were gone.

When it was time to go, I put on my shoes and socks, and got out of that chair feeling totally relaxed and almost rubbery. I wobbled across the floor to go pay for this amazing thing called a pedicure.

Guys out there, man up and get those feet of yours taken care of. I am a new man after my visit to the nail spa.

And believe me, my feet feel and even look.... amazing!
