Garden Club greets new members

The Shelbyville Garden Club held its August meeting at the Farm Bureau, with Gloria Hart and Dawn Rogers serving as hostesses.

President Janie Burke presided over the meeting with 17 members and one guest in attendance. Following a devotion, Burke welcomed four new members; Faye Sudberry, Libby Davidson, Louise Armstrong, and Becky Cortner.

Treasurer Gloria Hart, reported the club's current balance. Club members discussed future outings and upcoming community projects. It was decided to again support the Habitat by donating dirt or trees for landscaping for new homes that are now completed. A thank you letter from the Argie Cooper Public Library was shared expressing appreciation for the flower arrangement delivered to them during National Garden Week.

Toby Haynes was responsible for the program and shared her experience and passion for feeding and protecting birds. She admires and appreciates the birds that frequent the dozen feeders in her yard. She contributes the abundance of trees and shrubs to attracting birds and providing protection to them, as well as feeding them sunflower seeds and mixed seed feed. Toby suggested a number of informational books including National Geographic, North American Birdfeeder and the Smithsonian Handbook of Birds to help members identify and learn more about birds.

Awards were given for arrangements using the "Bird House" theme. Members were encouraged to create a design using any kind of plant material with a bird house used in the arrangement. Club Member, Wilene Bomar, served as judge.

Winners in the large category were Faye Sudberry, blue; Louise Armstrong, red, Kay Simmons, yellow.

Winners in the medium category were Becky Cortner, blue; Evelyn McGrew, red; Dawn Rogers, yellow.

Horticulture was "Oak Leaf Hydrangea" and the blue winner was Sandra Crowell.

What Have You specimen winners were: Louise Armstrong, Daylily, blue; Sandra Crowell, Hydranga, red; Faye Sudberry, Hydranga, yellow.

The September meeting will consist of a recycling program by Gay Ervin and members should create an arrangement using the theme "Recycling your Flower Containers" and use earth-friendly materials.New members, from left: Faye Sudberry, Libby Davidson, Louise Armstrong and Becky Cortner.
