GLADEVILLE -- A close contest at halftime ended up being a blowout as visiting Shelbyville Central took one on the chin in a 51-26 loss to undefeated Wilson Central in a non-district matchup on Friday night.

The Golden Eagles (2-2) scored a touchdown on the final play of the first half when Marquis Morton outjumped his defender and hauled in a 24-yard pass from quarterback Brayden Ward. The two hooked up for the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 21-20 at the intermission.

Both teams moved the ball at will in the first half with Shelbyville collecting 226 yards of total offense and the Wildcats (4-0) 153.

Ward connected on 15-of-24 passes for 192 yards and a pair of touchdown in the first half.

Wildcats dominate

'The second half was all Wilson Central as the Wildcats scored 30 unanswered points before the Eagle reserves tacked on a late touchdown when freshman quarterback Mason Cunningham scored on a 47-yard run.

"Offensively, we were in a rhythm in the first half. We really did some good things and that score at the end of the half was huge," Shelbyville coach Jason Hardy said. "We just came out in the second half and dropped some easy passes, missed a couple of assignments and had just a lack of execution."

The Eagles led 12-7 after the first quarter, scoring off a 28-yard pass from Ward to Morton and a two yard run by Morton. Both extra-points were no good.

Trey Givens scored off a one-yard run for Wilson Central.

Double scores hurt

Back-to-back touchdowns for the Wildcats, a three-yard run by Givens followed by a seven-yard scamper by Alex Price along with point after kicks by Brad Cavanough put Wilson Central up 21-12 before the Eagles scored with no time remaining in the half.

The winners scored 16 points in the third quarter.

Cavanough nailed a 41-yard field goal after a Shelbyville turnover, Tim Fitzgerald off a four-yard run and Gabe Angel with a two-yard with Cavanough good on the kick to increase the lead to 37-20.

Wilson Central tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth -- a 21-yard run by Kyle Coombs followed by an 11-yarder by Kaleb Butler.

Defensive woes

The Wildcats rushed for 360 yards off 50 carries for an average of 7.2 yards a touch.

Shelbyville's defense has allowed 1,140 yards of rushing in the first four games.

"We're struggling at stopping the run and believe me we're trying as a coaching staff and trying as players, but is seems to me that we just don't have people that want to come out and hit people and make tackles," Hardy said.

"I don't have an answer for that right now but we're going to continue to work on it. To be successful on defense, you've got to have people that want to hit and right now we're taking instead of delivering."

Offense shackled

Shelbyville was held to only 98 yards of offense in the second half, including 2-of-11 in air for five yards and two interceptions.

Cunningham led the Eagles on the ground with 49 yards on four carries followed by Morton with 47 yards on a dozen rushes.

"I don't want to take anything away from Wilson Central, they are undefeated after four game for a reason. They are a very good football team," Hardy said. "We just got to get back to work and correct our mistakes and get ready for a big district game next week with Columbia."

The Eagles entertain Columbia Friday night at 7.
