WARTRACE -- Having fallen behind in the first half, the Cascade Lady Champions (3-1) cut into the Central Magnet lead on Monday night, but three late goals put the match out of reach for the home team as Central Magnet cruised to the 6-2 win.

Central Magnet struck the first blow and put the Lady Champs in an early hole on Monday with a quick goal barely seven minutes into the game. Shannon Miller took off on a breakaway and snuck a shot past the Cascade defense to the back of the net for the 1-0 Central Magnet lead.

The visitors doubled their lead with another goal about three minutes later on a long lob shot from about 30 yards out to go up 2-0.

Not giving up

But the Lady Champs battled back and cut the deficit in half thanks to a long goal of their own by freshman Joscelyn Phillips with 24:45 to play in the opening half.

After several shots on goal by the Lady Champs, Central Magnet turned the tables on the home team and extended the lead back to two goals just before the halftime break.

As devastating as the late goal in the first half was, the Lady Champs came out guns blazing early in the second half.

Led by senior Tori Slater, the Lady Champs continued to pepper the Central Magnet goal with shots, eventually breaking through following a Cascade corner kick.

Closing in

Cari Brown found Slater in front of the goal on the corner and the Lady Champs had cut the deficit to one goal yet again.

And while the Lady Champs continued to make runs at the goal, they couldn't finish the shots and tie the score.

Looking for anything to break the momentum, Central Magnet finally quieted the Lady Champion offense with a goal off a penalty kick by Miller on a PK after she was fouled inside the box.

Senior Tori Slater wins a 50-50 ball and eyes an open teammate on a run. Slater scored the Lady Champs' second goal of the match during the 50th minute of the match.

Central takes off

The visitors tacked on two more goals in the final three minutes to extend the final score 6-2.

Cascade peppered the Central Magnet goal with a total of 15 shots on goal, with Slater and teammate Katelynn Edde taking four and three shots, respectively.

The Lady Champs are back in action this afternoon as they travel to Tullahoma in another non-district matchup beginning at 6:30.
