UNIONVILLE -- The Community Viqueens notched a big win over MTCS on Tuesday night with a 3-1 home victory.

Having dropped a few matches against tough opponents, Coach Allison Martin was looking for a way to ignite a fire in her team going into Tuesday's match.

"I challenged them a little bit. I thought we needed to play more consistently. We had really good serves. We hit where we're supposed to be hitting," Martin said.

Right moves

The Viqueens picked up the first set victory 25-16, but fell in the second set 25-22.

In that second set, the Viqueens struggled a bit with finding the open spots on the Lady Cougars' side of the net.

"In the second set we got a little bit tight when we were swinging," Martin said.

But the Viqueens made the necessary adjustments for wins in sets three and four.

"In the third and fourth sets it was a lot easier to swing harder when we had the lead," Martin said. And the Viqueens had the lead for the vast majority of the last two sets.

Battle solved

In both sets, the teams battled for early control of the scoreboard, but eventually the Viqueens came out on top.

Hannah Busbee stepped up her game in the later sets, picking up several key blocks and kills.

She led the Viqueens with 16 total kills, six blocks and five aces.

In the fourth set, Community took control late thanks to big plays by Busbee and freshman Lacey Reed.

Reed slammed home the final match point in the fourth set, securing the Viqueen victory.

"She's just learning the game. She's going to be one we're going to more. She made some big plays tonight when we needed her to," Martin said.

Reed tallied six kills and a pair of blocks to her credit during the match, but she wasn't the only Viqueen to load up the stats chart.

Katie Leverette added 10 aces and five kills, Kelsey Dennis had 24 assists and six aces, and senior libero Kristin Ray had eight digs.

Blair Demonbreum also helped lead the Viqueen offense with nine kills.

Community returns to action on Thursday with another home match against Culleoka. The Viqueens opened the season with a five-set marathon match against the Lady Warriors with a 3-2 loss. Community hopes for payback with the opening serves set for 6 p.m.
