Hearing date set in teacher sexting case

Thursday, September 13, 2012

A preliminary hearing was set quickly Wednesday for a Community High School teacher accused of soliciting one of his students over a cell phone.

Following a continuance granted in the case two weeks ago, Oct. 25 has been set as a hearing date for Stephen B. Givens, 34, of Smyrna.

On that date, Givens will appear before General Sessions Judge Charles Rich, who will decide if there is enough evidence to send the case to the November session of the Bedford County grand jury.

Givens, the school's band and choir director, has been accused of sending multiple texts and requests for photos to a female student. He has been charged with a single count of solicitation of a minor and is free on $5,000 bond.

The teacher did not appear in court on Wednesday. He is represented by Nashville defense attorney Vincent Wyatt.

According to school superintendent Dr. Ray Butrum, Givens has been suspended from his teaching job without pay.
