Stores fined for selling alcohol to youths

Friday, September 14, 2012

Three convenience stores were cited by Shelbyville's beer board Wednesday for selling alcohol to underage customers.

Violations were issued for Jayuikl Patel of J Tobacco and Beer, 610 S. Cannon Blvd., and Segal Chaudhari of Corner Market, 214 Eagle Blvd.

Both stores were also cited earlier this year. Owners must choose to have their beer licenses suspended for 60 days or pay a $2,500 fine.

First offense

Cited on first offense Wednesday was Sujanben Rameshbhair Patel of Hopps Express #1, 601 Madison St.. His choice is a 30-day suspension of the store's beer permit or a $500 fine.

Fines must be paid within seven days.

The stores were the only ones inside city limits caught during a recent joint sting conducted by Shelbyville police and the Bedford County Sheriff's Department.

Fifteen Shelbyville convenience stores -- including J Tobacco and Beer and Corner Market -- accepted fines from the city's beer board last spring after being nabbed in "Operation Underage," a separate sting conducted by the sheriff's department in March.
