Shelbyville Central senior Amy Beth McGowan made school history Friday afternoon by being the first girl to advance to the TSSAA State Golf Tournament.

McGowan was tied with two other players for the fifth and final spot to advance to the state tournament at the end of the Region 4-AAA Tournament in Smyrna.

After tying the first sudden death playoff hole, McGowan birdied the next par-three hole after firing a shot to within two feet.

"That was just such a special moment for Amy Beth and all her family that was there," Central coach Kevin Thomas said.

"She has really worked and she is just such a great kid. Her family has really supported her over the past three years as well."

The state tournament will be played in Manchester in a few weeks with tee times yet to be determined.
