Missed order delays Gant sentencing

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

A sentencing hearing has been put off until next month due to a prisoner not being transported by the state.

Michael Tyrone Gant had been scheduled to be sentenced Monday for aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, possession of a firearm during a dangerous felony, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon following his conviction by a jury last month.

But Circuit Court Judge Robert Crigler had to reset the hearing for Oct. 22 after the Tennessee Department of Correction did not bring Gant to court due to receiving no transport order.

Gant came to the home of Bobbie Hendrix on the morning of June 22, 2010 brandishing a black pistol, accompanied by Danielle Jeffery. He pointed the gun at Hendrix demanding money and pills, ordering her to the floor, and holding the pistol to her head, taking approximately 70 pain pills, $180-$200, and a cell phone, officials said.

He was on parole at the time of the robbery and had just been released from prison in March 2010, where he was serving time for four aggravated robberies, two felony jail escapes, and an aggravated burglary. Gant also has an aggravated robbery charge pending in Coffee County.

"Deonta Twilley pointed a handgun at him while Emmanuel Houston tied his arms and legs together with a vacuum cord," according to a report by Shelbyville officer Jarred Frazier. "While he was tied up, Samantha Houston stole some of his belongings including $800 in cash, a flat screen television, a bag of marijuana and his cell phone."

Shelbyville police said Marlin was taken to Heritage Medical Center for injuries including a collapsed lung, broken rib and a severe head laceration. All six suspects fled and were arrested when their SUV was stopped in Murfreesboro.
