WARTRACE -- It was a homecoming to remember for the Cascade Champions as they hosted cross-county rival Liberty in the final regular season game at the Stable on Thursday night.

The Champs chewed up the yardage against the Patriots in the first half, finding the end zone three times.

Cascade had little trouble mobilizing the offense against Liberty, but it was the defense that opened up the scoring opportunities in the first quarter.

Strong start

In the first drive of the game, the Cascade defense held strong and forced a turnover on downs near midfield.

Six plays later, Lewis Faulk rumbled 28 yards for the first score of the game.

Liberty answered with a drive deep into Cascade territory, but Patriot quarterback Will Warner was picked off on the Cascade 10-yard line by Hunter Calvert.

Cascade's ensuing drive was capped off in the first play of the second quarter when quarterback Hayden Edmondson found Faulk on a short pass, which turned into an 86-yard touchdown reception. Calvert optioned to Faulk on the successful two-point attempt to put the Champs up 16-0 just one play into the second stanza.

On the move

Liberty again orchestrated another march into Champion territory, but again turned the ball over on downs.

Following the turnover on downs, the Champs finished their final possession of the half with another touchdown, this time on a 22-yard pass play from Edmondson to Kevin Conn.

As well as Cascade played in the first half, Cascade didn't seem as focused in the second half. Both teams battled back and forth in the third quarter, but neither team was able to post points on the board. Cascade did find one more score in the fourth quarter on a 70-yard run by Calvert.

But Liberty refused to go quiet into the night and capitalized on a pair of big plays on their final drive of the night to move into scoring position. David Trisdale single-handedly carried the Patriot offense down into the end zone on a pair of 19-yard runs, one of which being a touchdown. Warner tacked on a successful two-point conversion on a keeper to avoid the shutout.

In all, the Champs amassed 324 yards of total offensive yards with 140 coming on the ground. Liberty meanwhile had 103 yards through the air and 110 on the ground.

Liberty returns home next Thursday as the Patriots host Westwood for their homecoming showdown against Westwood while the Champions travel to Unionville to face arch-rival Community. Both kickoffs are set for 6:30 p.m.
