Victim, driver arrested after vehicle strikes man

Sunday, September 23, 2012

A driver who allegedly "ran over" another man and the victim himself, now hospitalized with a broken hip, are both charged with aggravated assault following a fight Thursday night, Shelbyville police said.

James Flippo, age and address unavailable, was admitted to Heritage Medical Center with a broken hip. Waylon Eugene Burnett, 23, of Blue Ribbon Parkway was taken to Bedford County Jail. Burnett is also charged with DUI.

A neighbor called police to report two men fighting in the middle of Raby Avenue. Officer Jerry Lawrence arrived to find Flippo crawling in the middle of the road and holding a brick, but able to describe Burnett's vehicle.

Officer Cody Swift found Burnett and the car on Blue Ribbon Parkway.

A friend with Burnett told police Flippo was struck after he appeared to be about to throw the brick at the car. Burnett got out following impact and began hitting Flippo with his hands, the friend, who has not been charged, said.

One of the car's mirrors was found by police at the fight scene.

Trail tells story

A man guilty of four charges of driving on a revoked license will be charged a fifth time upon leaving a Nashville hospital after an accident early Friday, Shelbyville police say.

Officers followed a trail of blood from a smashed brick mailbox on Maplewood Drive to a nearby home where they saw a bloodied Jose Olascoaga through a window.

A car with a smashed front end was outside, officer Gregg Loyd's report said.

Olascoaga was "injured, bleeding and very incoherent," Loyd said. He received initial treatment at Heritage Medical Center and was airlifted to Vanderbilt Medical Center.

He will also be charged with leaving the scene of an accident upon release from VMC, police said.
