CHAPEL HILL -- After overcoming a frigid start to Monday morning's District 11A/AA tournament at Henry Horton, Community's Zack West was able to punch his ticket to the region tournament on Monday at Lawrence County with an individual score of 82.

West carded a 43 on the front nine holes, but rebounded with a 41 to secure his trip to the next round.

"He's definitely helped our team out by giving a ten stroke advantage in most matches. And he was a medalist in all but one match.

Comeback

"Today, he did struggle on the front nine, but he did come back. He knew he had to qualify. Just getting to the next stage was priority number one. Hopefully he'll fight back and qualify for the state," said Community coach Ian Stitzel.

While West's 82 led the Vikings to a fifth place finish overall, Luke Primm made great strides for the Purple and Gold on Monday.

Primm posted one of his best scores of the season and finished with an 89, only missing out on a trip to the region tournament by a pair of strokes.

Good expectations

"He was within two strokes of qualifying. I was happy with his results. Part of it shows that he's a junior, so he's got a little bit more experience. My expectations are always wanting them to try to beat their average and Luke was able to shoot a couple strokes better than his average," Stitzel said.

Jake Garrette and Dillon West finished their run in the district tournament with a 99 and a 102, respectively.

While the team didn't qualify for the next round, Stitzel feels the team has come a long way since the start of the 2012 campaign.

"This year's team finished strong to post a winning record. Although the team fell short today, they were able to place in the top five and place ahead of teams that we lost to in regular play," he said.

Next step

West will continue his run next Monday with the hopes of clinching a berth in the 2012 state tournament at Willow Brook Golf Club.

"I feel good about his chances about making it out of the region. He improved his average from last season by a little over two strokes. If he can shoot near his average, he definitely should be able to qualify," Stitzel said.
