Gladys Arlene Lee

Friday, September 28, 2012

Gladys Arlene Lee, age 76, was born July 8, 1936, in Williston, North Dakota to Margaret and Edward Olson. She was raised by her maternal aunt and uncle Pearl and Lester Chamber in Ross, North Dakota.

On January 14, 1954, she married Arthur Selmer Lee. They farmed and ranched in rural White Earth, North Dakota where they had four children. She was a member of Cottonwood Lutheran Church and was active in the ladies aid and served as a Sunday school teacher. She was also an active member of the North Dakota Cattlewomen's Association and the Powers Lake PTA.

It was common knowledge that you were always welcome in Gladys' kitchen for coffee, fresh baked goods, and hospitality. Her children have fond memories of her fresh baked bread, caramel rolls, brownies, and lafsa. She always had a huge garden from which she created wonderful pickles, relishes, and other canned goods.

Over the years she helped support her family as a manager of Tupperware, waitress, cook, and lumber yard office manager.

In 1996, Gladys and Arty retired to Hawaii near their daughter. There she worked in sales at the local Dakine Discount Store in Kailua-Kona. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity in Kona.

In 2004, they returned to the mainland and settled in Shelbyville, Tennessee to be near their other children. During these last years she had the opportunity to pursue her interest in cross stitch, watching Jeopardy, and spending precious time with her family.

Gladys passed on to be with her beloved husband, Arty, on September 28, 2012, at her home in Shelbyville, Tennessee surrounded by her children.

She is survived by her children: DeAnn (David) Idso of Shelbyville, Teresa (Steven) Gray of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Jim (Debbie) Lee of Nashville, Tennessee, and Danny Lee (Robbie Main) of Beech Island, South Carolina. Brothers: Orris Olson and Arnold (Alda) Olson of Willison, North Dakota. Sisters: Phoebe Johnson of Center, North Dakota and Maurice (Kermit) Mickle of Oregon.
