LAWRENCEBURG -- A game that Shelbyville Central had total control of at halftime ended up being a hard-fought battle till the end as the Golden Eagles claimed a 49-42 victory over host Lawrence County in a District 8-AAA matchup on Friday night.

The Eagles built a 28-7 halftime advantage before being outscored 35-21 in the second half.

With the win, Shelbyville (3-4, 1-2 8-AAA) ends a four-game losing streak.

Wildcats erupt

The Wildcats got back in the game after recovering a pair of onside kicks that led to 14 points at the start of the second half.

"We came in looking for a win and thankfully we won," Central coach Jason Hardy said.

"Give Lawrence County a lot of credit, they came out and got those two onside kicks and scored each time and they were right back in this football game. We had our "hands team" out there and we just didn't come up with the ball."

Shelbyville led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter after a 21-yard touchdown pass from Brayden Ward to Tyler Eddings and a two-yard run by Marquis Morton.

Senior kicker Andrew Thompson was 5-of 6 on extra points.

Lawrence County (2-5, 0-4 8-AAA) scored midway through the second quarter off a 13-yard run by Clint Brewer with kicker Ben Evens making his first of six extra points.

The Eagles added two more touchdowns in the first half, a nine-yard run by Morton and a 80-yard pass from Ward to Eddings.

"I was very pleased with how we played in the first half. We did a good job of executing our game plan and made some big plays as well," Hardy said.

Onside kicks work

Back-to-back touchdowns after recovering on-side kicks cut the lead to 28-21, but a third consecutive onside kick failed as the Eagles recovered the ball.

On the first play of the drive, senior Tunde Onakoya raced 52 yards to the end zone to increase the lead to 35-21.

Lawrence County responded with a 23-yard pass from A.J. Long to Hunter Smith.

Shelbyville closed out the third quarter with a 76-yard pass from Ward to Ryan Carden as the Eagles posted a 41-28 advantage going into the final stanza.

The Wildcats wouldn't go away, scoring a pair of touchdowns to start the fourth quarter and take a 42-41 lead.

The Eagles put together a five-play drive that ate up 3:18 of clock capped off by a three-yard run by Morton, his third TD of the game, to secure the win.

"After they took the lead, we responded and scored a touchdown and I'm proud of how we battled back," Hardy said. "We just have so many starters out right now on defense and others really banged up, the off week is really needed."

Ward connected on 8-of 10 passes for 215 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

Morton had 128 yards on 16 carries with Eddings hauling in two passes for 101 yards along with two returns totaling 86 yards.

Shelbyville has two weeks to get healthy, returning to action a week from Friday in a huge district game with Tullahoma at Eagle Stadium.
