Although the actual Relay event won't take place until May 31 through June 1, 2013, teams raise money for months ahead of time, through a variety of individual and team fund-raisers. Two teams selling T-shirts had them on display at the kickoff.

Rodney Simmons, chairman of the 2013 Relay organizing committee, announced the theme for next year's event, "Dreaming In Color."

Participating teams will be randomly assigned the color associated with a particular type of cancer and will use that color, and information about that type of cancer, as part of their Relay booth, or "campsite," during the event next summer. Teams that were present for Saturday's kickoff got the opportunity to draw their colors.

Samantha Chamblee, who chaired the 2012 committee and is now chair of the state Relay council, announced the record-breaking final total of $126,000 for the 2012 Relay season and thanked this year's teams for their support.

The 2013 goal is $133,000.
