WARTRACE -- With about three minutes left on the clock, the Lady Champions looked like they were about to take a 2-1 win in their senior night over backyard rival Webb.

But a goal by Mackenzie Knotts stole the win from the Lady Champs, forcing a 2-2 draw.

"We were sluggish. We had a good passing game, we just didn't quite complete them. We had several crosses right in front of the goal, but just didn't finish. That's something we're going to have straightened out before the tournaments," said Cascade coach Monica Lewis.

"We were definitely able to push there at the end. The girls fought hard and it worked to our advantage," said Webb coach Karla Vogt.

First strike

Cascade senior Karly Grissom put the Lady Champs on the board following a penalty kick about 16 minutes into the match, following a handball foul inside the box.

"She's reached her comfort zone. With that, I think has come the confidence of her to play the way she has," Lewis said.

But Hailey Williams answered for Webb with 10:10 to go in the first half to knot the game at one goal apiece heading into the break.

Cascade recaptured the lead in the 51st minute when Katelynn Edde fired a shot to the back of the nylon following a corner, giving the Lady Champs a 2-1 advantage with about 30 minutes to go.

Catching up

But as the fates would have it, a final push with under 2:30 to go gave Webb the tying goal when Mackenzie Knotts hit the equalizing score.

Even though the game ended in a tie on the scoreboard, Lewis spoke of her seniors' accomplishments during their time at Cascade.

"This group, with the group that graduated last year, is a group I've coached since they were five or six years old. They've played together a long time. They're a good solid group and they're very dependable. I'm very proud of them. They're a great group of kids," she said.

Next match

Cascade is back in action this afternoon as the Lady Champs travel to Marshall County.

"We do have some time that we can back up and fix some of the things that we need to fix. That gives us about a solid week before we get into the tournaments," Lewis said.
