Lettie Phillips celebrated her 83rd birthday with family at Bedford County Christian Care Center on Sunday, Sept. 16.

Lettie, or "Little Bit," as she was called, was born on Sept. 12, 1929, and has lived in Bedford County most of her life. When she was 20, Lettie went to Mississippi to help her sister, who was having health issues, with her children. She ended up living there for a few years, and met her future husband, Walter P. Phillips. They were married 38 years until his death in 1987. Walter and Lettie had 4 children -- 3 sons, and 1 daughter.

From oldest to the youngest, they are as follows: Walter Phillips, who has two children -- Tay and Cory Phillips; Danny Phillips, who has 4 children -- Natasha, Jasmine, Jessica and Logan; Cynthia Greer, who has one son -- Drew Greer; Willie Philllips, who has 3 children -- Julie Stanley, Brandon Hernandez and Wesley Phillips.

Lettie worked in a uniform shop while she lived in Mississippi. Once she returned to Bedford County, she worked at the Fly Center making clothing. She even made all of her daughter's clothes.

After retirement, she then took care of children of all ages from all over the county. Cynthia and her family have counted more than 400 children that Lettie cared for. She continues to love children, and always enjoys her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as they visit daily.
