Viqueens pile up 13 goals in win
UNIONVILLE -- Thursday night's match against the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs had a slightly different tone than the previous two matches the Community Viqueens have played.
In their last two matches, the Viqueens were able to edge out 1-0 wins against Webb and Cascade, while struggling to land shots on goal.
Not the case against Cornersville.
The Viqueens peppered 24 shots on goal during a 13-0 blowout win over the Lady Bulldogs, improving Community's district record to 7-1.
"I'm very proud of our girls' efforts tonight. We passed the ball very well and had very good ball possession tonight. The story has been our defense," said Community coach Mark Neill.
The Viqueen defense didn't have to do a whole lot of work against Cornersville on Thursday with the midfielders and forwards dictating the pace of the game for most of the 80 minutes.
"We kept it on the other end of the field most of the night. Our shots were on goal tonight. That's one thing I was very pleased with. We didn't have many shots going high or wide. Their goalie had quite a few saves," Neill said.
It took the Viqueens a little over eight minutes to find the back of the net on their first goal, but once they got the offense started, there was little the visitors could do to slow the potent offense.
Community piled up eight first-half goals, and tacked on an additional five in the second half to preserve the 13-0 shutout win.
Viqueen forwards Kali Sitz and Taylor Thompson combined for five goals--all of which came in the first half.
While the two forwards helped lead the offense early, Community saw a total of 13 goals by 10 different players.
Also finding the back of the net in the first half were Courtney Williams, Kristen Brothers, and Ashley Reece.
"It was an all-around good effort," Neill said.
In the second half, the Viqueens worked the entire roster onto the field for some valuable playing time, finding five more goals by five different players.
Faith Augustus, Kelsey Fletcher, Jordan Huntley, Lexie Bennett, and Mercedes Huntley each found second-half scores to lift the Viqueens to the thunderous victory.
Neill credits a new formation implemented at the beginning of the year, which he says is starting to come together now, better than ever.
"We certainly have come a long way. Right before the season started, we implemented a new formation. That's what we've been running with all year. I think it took a little while for everybody to get comfortable with their new positions. I feel like everybody is working together so well," he said.
Community returns home for one final regular season match on Tuesday when the Viqueens welcome St. Andrews-Sewanee for a senior night showdown. And with virtually all the team members gelling at the right time, Neill is confident in his team's ability to perform well on the field.
"Everybody has gotten along so well and encouraged each other. It's been a real joy to coach them," he said.
