Mr. James Edward (Ed) Dillingham, age 85, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2012.
Graveside services, with full military honors, will be 3:30 PM, Sunday, October 14, 2012, at Willow Mount Cemetery. Jeff Smith of the Southside Church of Christ will officiate.
Visitation will be 12:00 to 3:00 PM, Sunday, at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel.
He was born November 3, 1926, in Orme, Marion County, Tennessee, to the late James Charles and Georgia Ruth Hooser Dillingham. He was a 1944 graduate of Wartrace High School. He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville on a football scholarship and then volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy after the fall season of 1944. He served as a Navy Hospital Corpsman, 1944-45. He then enrolled in Middle Tennessee State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950.
Mr. Dillingham was employed by the Rutherford County Board of Education, 1950-54, where he taught high school classes. He subsequently became an insurance agent, retiring in 1988, after 29 years as manager of the local Farm Bureau insurance agency. He then pursued his many hobbies, which included gardening, woodworking, and fishing.
He was a member of the Church of Christ, identified with the Southside Church of Christ congregation.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy (Dot) Florence Faulk Dillingham, in 2003.
He is survived by his son, Colonel Wayne Edward Dillingham, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), and his wife Chong Hui Dillingham, of Shelbyville; granddaughter, Caroline Marie Turgeon, and her husband Ian, of Deltona, Florida; and step grandchildren, Sarah Marie Deludos, of Manassas, Virginia, and Specialist Louis Thomas Deludos, Jr., U.S. Army, of Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested donations to one of Mr. Dillingham's favorite charities, the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, Inc., 410 Allied Drive, Nashville, TN 37211.
