Guns up for grabs at Longbeards event

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

You'll see a lot of chili suppers popping up this time of year, but there's one on Friday night at the Hall of Fame Room at Calsonic Arena that'll be a guaranteed blast.

It's the biggest local fundraiser of the year for the Bedford County Longbeards, the local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Of course, patrons will be served chili and enjoy fellowship, but the real pull here is the club's annual 10-gun and safe drawing.

The Longbeards' gun selection committee has covered every base to please ticket purchasers. A good variety of shotguns, rifles and handguns will be raffled off on Friday night.

The Bushmaster AR-15 and Century Arms AK-47 copies will be sure to please recreational shooters, and a variety of bolt-action, lever-action and muzzle-loading rifles and shotguns, including a Remington Versa Max 12-gauge, will please hunting enthusiasts. There will also be a .45 pistol, .22 revolver and -- perhaps the grand prize -- a Superior Master Series gun safe up for grabs.

In addition to the drawing, there will also be a silent auction and a few side raffles with prizes that are sure to please the hunter and conservationist in the family.

Tickets for the drawing are $50 each, and can still be purchased at the door Friday evening. They will provide a chance at all 10 guns, the safe, and a meal. Tickets for the meal only will also be on sale at the door for $8. Doors will open for the chili supper and gun bash at 6 p.m.

Background checks will be performed on-site by partnering sponsor Hoselton Ventures of Lynchburg to ensure winners can take home their new guns, safely and legally.

The Longbeards hold a banquet each spring to benefit the conservation and charitable efforts of the NWTF, but its main source of funding for local projects is the chili supper and gun bash.

Helping out

These funds are used to provide a chapter scholarship program, take youth on hunting trips and educate on firearm safety, and donate to local charities and benefits whenever possible. Last year the group contributed $7,500 to local projects, and has a progressive commitment to increase its impact on the community.
