COLUMBIA -- Every team goes through the regular season hoping to paek by tournament time.

Such is the case for Shelbyville Central's Golden Eaglette soccer team.

The Eaglettes entered the District 8-AAA Tournament as the three-seed but rallied in the second half to claim a 2-1 win over top-seed Columbia on the road to secure the championship for the first time in four years.

Shelbyville also scored a pair of goals in the second half in a 2-1 win over second-seed Tullahoma on Tuesday evening to advance to the title game.

Region hosts

With the win, the Eaglettes will host the opening round of the region on Tuesday night against the loser of the Siegel/Blackman matchup scheduled for tonight at Siegel.

"I'm just so proud of this team and all the girls on it. This is just a great group of kids and a lot of fun to coach," Shelbyville coach Neal Gordon said.

"We started the season 1-5 against a very hard schedule with a very young team. It's really been fun to watch this team improve and grow up as the season progressed and I think it's fair to say that they are playing better right now than they have all season. We've seen improvement throughout the year and that's all you can ask for at this point of the season."

The Lady Lions (11-4-1) scored the lone goal of the first half when Sabrina Gonzalez found the back of the net at the 24:37 mark.

A number of Eaglettes were named all-district or received a special award. From left, Alexis Larion (1st team all-district), Olivia Doak (Freshman of the Year), Bree Horner (1st team all-district), Courtney Hornaday (2nd team all-district) and Heather Groves (2nd team all-district).

"We just didn't play very well in the first half. They controlled the tempo of the game and really took it us early. We played a little conservative in the first half and they scored a goal but we were still in it," Gordon said.

"We made a few adjustments, kind of changed our positioning and made a few substitutions here and there and got the goals we needed in order to win."

Sophomore power

A pair of sophomores provided the scoring for Shelbyville with Ashlee Sutton scoring first with 16:41 left to play followed by what proved to be the game-winning goal off the foot of Alexis Larion from a great assist by Hayley Puckett.

"For the second-straight game we had some players come off the bench and do a great job for us. Brooklyn Martin, Lesleigh Blackburn and Clorissa Campbell came in a made an impact for us," Gordon said. "Our goalie Katelyn Boyce along with Bailey Womble each made a key play late to keep them from scoring."
