Police find suspects in scrap metal theft
Two men accused of attempting to steal scrap metal got away from the owner, but couldn't escape the eyes of Shelbyville police officers Tuesday afternoon.
Henry Lewis Garrett, 61, of Earnhart Street and Alonzo Ladon Mason, 37, of Chockley Street were arrested after officers spotted their truck on Eaton Drive.
William Brown of Brown's Heating & Cooling, East Depot Street, told police he attempted to stop two men in a truck fitting the description of Garrett's as they put two heat chambers in its bed. The chambers are worth about $50, officer Cody King's report said.
"When the victim confronted them they took the items off the truck and started to leave," Kings said. "He got in front of the truck and told them not to leave because the police were on the way. They started to back up and he ran around to the back of the truck and they sped off while slinging gravel."
Officers Bobby Peacock and Jeff Goodrich saw the truck moments later on Eaton Drive and arrested the occupants.
Both suspects were charged with theft of property and Garrett was also charged with driving on a suspended license. Garrett is being held on $3,000 bond and Mason on $2,500 bond at Bedford County Jail.
