After disappointing first half, Shelbyville Central played like a team inspired in second half but it was too little to late in a 52-28 loss to visiting Centennial on Friday night.

The Cougars posted 21 points in the first quarter and matched it in the second stanza to hold a commanding 42-14 lead at the intermission while racking up 355 yards of total offense in the first half.

Shelbyville's two scores came from a 36-yard touchdown pass from starting quarterback Mason Cunningham to Tyler Eddings and a 93-yard kickoff return by senior Marquis Morton.

Early miscues

"We had a fumble early on our first possession of the game and that kind of put us in a bad spot and when that happened it kind of had a snowball effect for the rest of the first half," Central coach Jason Hardy said. "We missed a few scoring opportunities in the first half and just didn't finish some plays on defense and that was the tale of the first half."

The Cougars kicked a field goal to go up 45-14 midway through the third stanza but the Eagles responded with a 79-yard kickoff return by Eddings.

Morton recovered an on-side kick and Shelbyville took advantage of the opportunity when Eddings hauled in a 38-yard pass from Cunningham. Andrew Thompson' fourth extra-point cut the lead to 45-28 with 6:28 left in the third.

On the ensuing kickoff Zeke Mason recovered an on-side kick for the Eagles but the offense failed to convert it into any points.

"I thought we came out in the second half and really played well. Our defense got some big stops and we got some big play with our special teams," Hardy said. "Our special teams play was great tonight and we needed every play they made."

Freshman starter

A decision was made to start Cunningham at quarterback this week and the freshman fared well, connecting on 11-of-20 passes for 145 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

"It was a coaches decision. Our offense didn't score any points in our last game so we felt like we needed to look at something a little different and the quarterback position is one way you can do that," Hardy said. "Mason looked a little nervous and he should have been at the first of the game. Then he settled in and really showed the abilities he has to play that position and played well and I'm proud of him."

Shelbyville had a negative 21 yards rushing but collected a season-high 303 return yards.

Scottie Fleming paced Centennial with 206 yards on 19 carries with a pair of touchdowns.
