Funeral services for Barbara Kay Vest Crowell, age 69, of Johnson City, Tenn., a former resident of Shelbyville, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday October 27, 2012 in the chapel of Doak-Howell Funeral Home with Pastor Susan Springer officiating. Burial will follow in the Crowell's Chapel Cemetery in the Halls Mill Community. Mrs. Crowell passed on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012 at Johnson City Medical Center after a short illness.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
Born in Walnut Grove, Missouri, she was the daughter of the late Victor Lowry Vest. Barbara loved to do a great job of everything she committed to and enjoyed taking care of her family and home. Starting from a young age, she always wanted to travel and so she did, seeing many parts of the world with her husband and family. Throughout her full and busy life, she always found time for knitting.
She finished a BS in mathematics at MTSU. She helped run and taught at Al Batin Academy in King Khalid Military City, Saudi Arabia, and also taught at Community High School in Unionville, TN. She made many great friends and helped many lives as a teacher. She was Vice President and Retirement Plan Administrator at Valley Fidelity Bank in Knoxville, TN. She also worked as Administrative Assistant for Petromin in Riyadh, Saudi, Arabia and as a real estate agent in Knoxville and Jackson TN. Barbara was founder, owner and manager of Papillon Bakery in Shelbyville, TN.
Survivors include her husband of 36 years, Douglas E. Crowell of Johnson City, TN, sons Kimball Shahrokhi of Apex, N.C., Keivan Shahrokhi of Miami, FL, and Joseph Crowell of Portland, OR, mother Lottie Mae Hayes of Coffeyville, KS, sisters, Lexie McCoy & Blanche Cunningham both of Coffeyville, KS, Kathryn Hammer of Pittsburg, KS and Debra Brodbeck of Galveston, TX and grandson Aaron Kian.
