Shelbyville Central opened the season on the short end of a 45-29 score against visiting Brentwood Academy in a TSSAA Hall of Fame Game on Tuesday night.

The young Eaglettes played hard and with a lot of effort but a much bigger Brentwood Academy team proved to be too much to defend, especially in the paint, where the winners scored 38 points.

Hard play

"We played hard and I though we played together," Eaglette coach Kevin Thomas said. "Their size really caused us some problems on defense and we just didn't shoot the ball well on offense."

The Eaglettes only shot 23.7 percent from the field.

Central trailed 11-7 at the end of the first quarter and 23-16 at halftime.

Brentwood Academy went to a zone defense in the third quarter and held Shelbyville to only four points to take a 31-20 advantage into the final stanza.

More to learn

"They went to a 1-2-2 zone in the third quarter and we haven't had a chance to work on that at practice yet," Thomas said.

Hailey Piearson led the winners with a game-high 21 points, including a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe.

Breuna Jackson followed with 10 tallies.

Jameka Braden and Hannah Calvert led the Eaglettes with five points each.

'Better' times ahead

"We are a young team and we're going to get better and better." Thomas said. " I told the girls not to worry about this game and keep their confidence up."
