Shelbyville Central's Golden Eaglettes fell behind early and could never catch up in a 56-25 loss to visiting Oakland on Tuesday night.

"We've started the season off against a pair of quality basketball teams and both Brentwood Academy and Oakland are two of the top teams in the midstate," Central coach Kevin Thomas said. "I can only hope that playing that type of competition will only make us better later in the season."

Strong offense

The Lady Patriots jumped out to an 8-0 lead on the way to a 19-4 advantage by the end of the first quarter.

Oakland outscored the Eaglettes (0-2) 13-8 while holding them to only one field goal to go up 32-12 at halftime.

Shelbyville's defense played better in the second half, only allowing seven points in the third quarter as the winners posted a 39-17 lead going into the fourth stanza.

Oakland connected on three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to cap off the victory.

Foul shots

Shelbyville had chances at the charity stripe but only cashed in on 13-of-28 attempts.

"We didn't even shoot 50 percent from the free throw line and if we hit more of those we keep this game a little closer," Thomas said. "We got in the double bonus early both in the first half and second half and we just didn't take advantage of it."

Oakland committed 25 fouls compared to Shelbyville's 13.

Talented freshman Shelby Gibson paced the Lady Patriots with 15 points while Ellen Riggins added 13.

Shelbyville's lone double-figure scorer was Jameka Braden with 11.

How to win

"For us to be successful, we've got to make some shots and we're just not doing that right now," Thomas said. "We've also got to do a much better job of taking care of the basketball and cut down on our turnovers."

The Eaglettes return to action Friday night at 6:30 against Cannon County in the Cannon County Thanksgiving Tournament.
