After a close first half, Shelbyville Central saw visiting Oakland pull away after halftime for a 76-48 win in the season opener for the Golden Eagles on Tuesday.

"I really liked our effort and the focus we played in the first half, even though we we're really clicking on offense, we played well on defense and battled the whole first half," Central coach Stan Eggleston said. "We didn't come back the same way in the third quarter and that was the difference in the ballgame."

In a low-scoring first quarter, the Eagles (0-1) held an 8-3 lead before the Patriots regrouped to outscore Shelbyville 25-17 in the second stanza and post a 28-25 lead at the intermission.

Oakland took over in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 24-9 to go up 52-34 after three periods.

The Patriots' size and depth really caused Shelbyville some problems in the second half as the Eagles were dominated on the glass.

"There's no doubt about it, we've got some work to do and we've got to do a much better job of getting into position for rebounds and blocking out," Eggleston said, "We work on that every day at practice and we'll keep working on that."

A total of 53 fouls were committed with the Eagles collecting 27 and Oakland 26.
