Coach Allison Martin challenged her team throughout the offseason to become more offensiveminded and it paid off as they opened the regular season with a 72-27 thrashing of Columbia Academy on Tuesday night at Roger K. Brothers Gym.

Community led 21-5 after one quarter and bumped the advantage to 38-15 at the half.

Defense works well

"One thing I think we did really well was play great defense and that jump-started our offense tonight," Viqueen coach Allison Martin said. "We played aggressive, stayed out of foul trouble, and played very unselfish ball.

"It was a great way to start the regular season."

Freshman Sarah Pierce scored a game-high 24 points, including two 3-pointers, in her varsity debut and fellow newcomer Davie Barnes netted an impressive 14 with four treys to lead the Viqueen offense.

Senior post Katie Leverette added 10 points and was a dominating presence in the paint and on the boards, allowing the home squad to wear down the roster-challenged visitors with superior numbers and fresher legs.

Smooth cruise

Community led 60-20 after three quarters.

Nine Viqueens scored and the team finished with six 3-pointer.

Columbia Academy was led by Leslie Golden with 18 points.

The Viqueens take on district foe Moore County in Lynchburg on Tuesday at 6.
