Fears of a major accident arose when Shelbyville police were told two vans filled with children had collided late Wednesday afternoon on Union Street at Green Hills Drive.

Arriving law enforcement officers were initially unable to determine how many were injured, at one point reporting 11 hurt to emergency dispatchers.

But only the driver and two passengers in one van suffered injuries beyond minor cuts or bruises, officer Jarred Frazier said.

The injured

Chelsea Harvey, 30, of Fairlane Drive, pulled her Nissan Quest van from Green Hills Drive into the path of a northbound SUV on Union Street, Frazier said. Harvey and two passengers in her van, Chey Harvey, 13, and Lailee Thompson, 3, were taken to Heritage Medical Center, according to Frazier.

Poe Hsai, 34, of Nashville, and six passengers in his Honda Pilot escaped serious injury, Frazier said.

Chelsea Harvey was fortunate to have not been more seriously hurt as the van was struck directly in the driver's door, officers at the scene remarked.

Dangerous site

Several serious wrecks have occurred at the intersection in recent years, most involving vehicles pulling onto Union Street in the path of oncoming traffic.

With few other through streets in the area of the accident, Union Street was blocked for approximately an hour with traffic routed through narrow Jennings Lane and Shaw Road.
