In one of their most complete games of the young season, Shelbyville Central's Golden Eaglettes claimed a 46-41 victory over visiting Lincoln County in their District 8-AAA season opener on Friday night.

"This was a big win for our basketball team. Any time you can get a district win at home it's huge and important," Eaglette coach Kevin Thomas said.

"We think this district is going to be very competitive and tight until the end of the regular season. To get this first district win against Lincoln County, a team we think is one of the best in the district, is a nice accomplishment."

First-half climb

After falling behind 6-0, Shelbyville (2-6, 1-0 8-AAA) regrouped early to only trail 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Led by sophomore Hannah Calvert's three 3-pointers, the Eaglettes outscored the Lady Falcons 18-12 in the second stanza to hold a 25-22 advantage at halftime.

"The big difference in the first half was Hannah hitting those three pointers that gave us a little separation," Thomas said. "We really did a good job on the defensive end of the court as well in the first half that helped keep us in the gave early."

Both teams struggled to score in the third quarter with the Eaglettes holding on to a 29-28 advantage going into the final eight minutes.

Important run

Shelbyville started the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run to go up 40-30 with six minutes left, but a few missed free throws and costly turnovers hampered the Eaglettes as Lincoln County fought back to cut the lead to 42-41 with 1:03 left to play before the winners connected on 4-of-6 free throws in the final minute to claim the victory.

"We're getting better. We did a better job of hitting our free throws and layups but we still have room for a lot of improvement in those areas," Thomas said. "We did a much better job of rebounding and they are a pretty good 3-point shooting team and I think we are defending that well."

Top scorers

Jameka Braden led the Eaglettes with 15 points while Bree Horner had a double/double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Cortney Storey paced the lady Falcons with a game-high 19 points with Khaila King pitching a dozen.
