CHAPEL HILL -- Although it was a low-scoring battle for third place in the Duck River Valley Conference World Championship on Saturday night, the Community Middle Viqueens were able to score just enough to fend off the MTCS Middle Lady Cougars, 26-24.

MTCS pulled out a narrow, 2-point advantage after the first quarter to go into the second quarter up, 7-5.

It was a decisive second frame that proved to be the difference in the game's outcome as the Viqueens outscored the Lady Cougars, 11-6.

MTCS battled back in the second half and outscored the Viqueens 11-10, but couldn't overcome the damage Community inflicted in the second quarter.

Multi scorers

While the bulk of the Lady Cougars' points came from Camden Adams and Abby Buckner, who scored 12 and eight, respectively, Community was able to distribute the ball and find several scorers.

Karla Pena paced the winners with eight points in the contest, while Kizzey Lane and Alyssa Freeman added key points as well. Lane and Freeman finished the game with a combined 13 points.

Another key statistic the Viqueens simply dominated was the free throw attempts. MTCS only made one free throw, but only made one trip to the line in all four quarters. The Viqueens however, made 7-of-13 attempts, which proved key in securing the victory.
