Three people lost their lives in a head-on crash south of Shelbyville late Tuesday afternoon.

Both drivers died at the scene on Highway 82 South approximately two miles south of Shelbyville, State Trooper Dallas Rife said.

They were identified as Morris Parker of La Vergne, who would have turned 72 Thursday, and Eric Holestak, 46, of Murfreesboro.

A passenger in the Parker car, Mary Motlow, 62, of Lynchburg, died at a Nashville hospital later Tuesday night, Rife said.

Motlow had been airlifted to Nashville for treatment of multiple injuries, Rife said.

Holestak crossed the center line and struck the Parker car head-on, according to Rife.

"It appeared that he may have fallen asleep," Rife said. "Alcohol was involved. He had an open container in the vehicle and he smelled of alcohol."

The victims died of multiple "blunt force" injuries, Rife said. He noted that the cars came to an almost instant stop upon impact. No skid marks were visible.

All involved were wearing seat belts, Rife said.

Highway 82 was closed for approximately two and a half hours while a Tennessee Highway Patrol reconstruction team studied the crash and the drivers were cut from their vehicles.
