If she lives to be 100, Destiny Williams will experience the next in a trend of sequential dates which have occurred this decade. But that is 32,162 days from now on January 1, 2101.

Today, it's her birthday, and she plans to enjoy being the only student in the Bedford County school system who turns 12 on this date of 12-12-12. The Harris Middle School sixth grader will spend the day quietly with family and friends, and over the weekend will share a birthday celebration with an aunt who shares a December birthday.

Moment of fame

She will also enjoy a bit of quiet notoriety among her fellow students, now that her birthday secret is out. "She was very nervous when I called her to the office yesterday," said Principal Jimmy Sullivan, arranging a visit from the T-G.

Destiny realized the 12/12/12 birthday was upcoming last year, on November 11, but says she had not thought about the phenomena previously.

The soft spoken pre-teen said she likes to draw, hopes to become a nurse or doctor someday, and is thankful for her mother, Tammy Cawthon. "If it wasn't for my mother, I wouldn't be here," she said. Destiny's father is Chris Williams.

Rare honor

By taking an average of the four million babies born in the U. S. in 2000, Destiny is one of about 11,000 young people celebrating a similar birthday today. In Birmingham, Ala. a young man named Kiam Moriya will kick off his birthday celebration a little after noon. Moriya was born on this day in December 2000 at 12:12 p.m.

Today is a popular date for nuptials worldwide, with one source citing a 1,431 percent spike in wedding plans, in spite of the date's mid-week arrival.

It also marks the date of an all-star benefit for victims of Superstorm Sandy. "121212: The Concert for Sandy Relief" will be held at Madison Square Garden this evening, and will be telecast and streamed to radio stations an internet gateways throughout the world.

Some believe...

Though sources disagree whether the 12th or the 21st of this month is more significant, many spiritualists believe the Ancient Mayan calendar speaks of 12-12-2012 " ... as the end of times as we know it, and the beginning of a new cycle of evolution for planet earth, humanity and the cosmos," according to website bodymindspiritjourneys.com. "December 2012 is being looked upon as a significant spiritual event and a momentous shift in the collective consciousness of the planet."

Destiny shares her birthday today with Jennifer Connelly (41), Cathy Rigsby (59), Connie Francis (73), Tracy Austin (49), Bob Barker (88) and Mayim Bialik (36).

Lottery numbers

Kym Gerlock, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Lottery, says the lottery historically sees an uptick in sales on unusual dates similar to today's date of 12/12/12.

"We certainly expect an increase in sales based on the interesting numbers for tomorrow's date," Gerlock said Tuesday in an e-mail to the Times-Gazette.
