The Community Viqueens extended their win streak to seven games with a 51-41 win over Cornersville on Friday night to close out the first half of the season.

Katie Leverette continues to pile up the points for the Purple and Gold as she led the way offensively with 16 points with eight points in the first quarter to overcome an early deficit. But make no mistake about it, the home team's defense remains the catalysts for the consecutive game streak.

"I think that it was the pressure that we were able to put on them in the press that made the difference tonight,' Viqueen coach Allison Martin said. "We made some adjustments early in the game to counter some of what they were doing to us offensively.

"On the other side of that, the girls have really improved with their decision making and shot selection on offense. We continue to improve in some area of the game with each outing and that it is a tribute to the hard work they are putting in daily in the gym."

Cornersville jumped out early and led by as many as six in the first quarter before the Viqueens (8-4) highly kinetic full court pressure began to manifest turnovers and steals to turn the tide.

Leverette's basket at the buzzer put her squad up 12-11 to begin the second period and the Viqueens would never relinquish the lead again as they went on to lead 22-19 behind the ever improving Kristin Brothers two three-pointers at the intermission.

The defensive pressure applied by Community elevated to another gear in the third period forcing seven turnovers with Jordan and Mercedes Huntley picking up a couple of steals apiece to widen the margin to 37-28 to begin the final eight minutes of play.

The visitors continued to find their quest of getting the ball up court a daunting task as they were swarmed and harassed into turnovers to allow the Viqueens to quickly answer any threat that could be mounted and the game ended in a double digit victory.

Leverette earned high scorer honors with 16. Brothers netted 12 for the Viqueens.

Brittney Umbles poured in 13 for the visitors and Kaitlyn Rogers contributed 11.

Community returns to play on Jan. 4 when they welcome district opponent Huntland.
