Although their regular season ended several weeks ago, the Community Middle Viqueens and Vikings got a chance to participate in a Holiday Tournament held at Page High School last weekend. In all, Community split games with the Viqueens picking up a convincing win over Fariview Middle, while the Vikings fell in a nail-biter to Hillsboro.
In the girls game, the Viqueens quickly took an early control of the momentum and established a 13-4 lead after one quarter of play. While the Viqueens saw their go-to scorers deliver throughout all four quarters, it was a solid defensive effort that stifled Fairview and allowed the Viqueens to run away with the victory.
In the second quarter, Community added eight more, but held Fairview in check and only allowed a meager two points.
Even more impressive was the third quarter performance where the Viqueens outscored Fairview 14-0. Farview rallied for eight points in the fourth, but couldn't overcome the early deficit and the Viqueens were able to secure the 37-14 win.
In all, Community saw seven players with shots falling for their winning efforts. Hannah Mitchell paced the Purple and Gold with nine points, all nine of which came from the perimeter attack. Sydney Segroves added two more triples as well.
Community 13 8 14 3 -- 37
Fairview 4 2 0 8 -- 14
Community: Hannah Mitchell 9, Kizzey Lane 6, Sydney Segroves 6, Alyssa Freeman 6, Haley Reed 6, Karla Pena 2, Lacie Woodall 2.
3-Point goals: Community (5): Mitchell 3, Segroves 2.
Halftime score: Community 21, Fairview 6.
Hillsboro 33, Community 31 -- It wasn't the start the Vikings wanted against Hillsboro. After only managing two points in the opening frame, the Vikings rallied and pushed the game down to the wire, but eventually fell 33-31.
Hillsboro took an early command of the scoreboard and posted a 12-2 advantage after the first six minutes of play. But the scoring drought that struck the Vikes in the opening frame was nowhere to be found in the second quarter. Community was able to rally and trim the deficit to just two points heading into the half.
Hillsboro entered the second half on the offensive and quickly recaptured the lead with 12 more in the third quarter while the Vikings could only come up with six more points.
As before, the Vikings were able to rally and chase Hillsboro down to the wire, but were unable to complete the come-from-behind victory as Hillsboro held on for the slim 33-31 win. As in much of the regular season, Jackson Wisener led the Vikings and accounted for nearly half of the team's points. He led the Purple and Gold with 14, while Tatan Cagle chimed in with seven.
Community also saw its share of 3-pointers fall, with Spencer Smith, Austin Bonner, and Tatan Cagle each drilling shots from range.
Community 2 12 6 11 -- 31
Hillsboro 12 4 12 5 -- 33
Community: Jackson Wisener 14, Tatan Cagle 7, Spencer Smith 3, Austin Bonner 3, Justin Richardson 2, Tanner McClure 2.
3-Point goals: Smith, Bonner, Cagle.
Halftime score: Hillsboro 16, Community 14.
