WATERTOWN -- Save a sluggish second quarter, the Cascade Champions (8-4) battled the Cheatham County Cubs (12-2) fairly evenly throughout the first, third, and fourth quarters in their second round game of the Watertown Christmas Tournament on Friday.

However, being outscored 18-2 in the second quarter was just too much for the Champs to overcome in the second half as they suffered their first defeat in the tournament on Friday afternoon, 63-45.

"We just kind of got intimidated tonight. They're a good team," said Cascade coach Mike Edmondson.

The Champs kept the game within reach in the first quarter and were only down 13-10 heading into the second quarter -- a feat which Edmondson credited to the defensive efforts in the first quarter.

"Defense played well in the first half, but the offense struggled. We only scored two points in the second quarter and that killed us," Edmondson said.

Despite being down 31-12 at the break, Cascade continued to try and work the offense that has been potent all year long.

"It got to a point where we tried to do some of the things we've been doing and press a little bit," Edmondson said.

That opened up more scoring opportunities for the Champs, but overall, Cascade shot an uncharacteristic 14-of-49 throughout the game.

"We shot poorly tonight for the first time in a long time. We're going to use this to get better," Edmondson said.

Still, the Champs threw everything they had at the Cubs in the second half, and posted 19 points in the fourth quarter. Cheatham County seemingly had an answer for every Champion score, with the Cubs adding 26 more in the fourth to secure the win.

In all, Will Holt paced the Champs with 15 points, including a pair of triples. Alex Hatchett also added two 3-pointers as part of his nine points.

The Champs still got another chance to bounceback in tournament play against the Page Patriots (5-7) on Saturday, but results were unavailable at press time. Look for additional coverage from the Watertown Christmas Tournament in next week's editions of the T-G.
