WINCHESTER -- Both teams struggled offensively but in the end the home team survived as the Shelbyville Central Golden Eaglettes fell 35-32 to host Franklin County in a District 8-AAA matchup on Tuesday night.

To say that the Eaglettes (9-10, 3-2 8-AAA) didn't bring their "A" game would be an understatement.

"We started the game very flat and I just think we didn't come to play. We missed some easy shots inside and didn't block-out very well," Central coach Kevin Thomas said.

"We did play a little better in the second half but we just didn't get it done."

Points were hard to come by in the opening frame as Shelbyville held on to a 6-5 lead at the end of the first.

Franklin County's Chelsea Holman warmed up in the second quarter and scored 13 of her game-high 20 points to help build a 24-14 lead by halftime.

"I told the girls we were lucky to only be down 10 at halftime as bad as we played in the first half," Thomas said.

Shelbyville looked like a completely different team at the start of the second half, scoring nine unanswered points to cut the lead to 24-21.

Franklin County only scored three points in the third quarter, a 3-pointer by Holman at the 2:45 mark, but held on to a 27-23 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Sarah Beth Martin nailed a 3-pointer early in the fourth to cut the lead to one point at 27-26 then Jameka Braden scored with 1:34 left to play to cut it to 31-30 but the Eaglettes never could regain the lead.

Braden paced the Eaglettes with 18 points.

"There's still a close battle for second place in the district and now every district game becomes even more important," Thomas said.

The Eaglettes travel to Lincoln County for a district match up on Friday night 6.
