Funeral services for George W. Holden, age 80, of Unionville will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2013 in the chapel of Doak-Howell Funeral Home with Brother Bruce Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in the Burns Cemetery in Rockvale Community (Rutherford Co.) Mr. Holden passed on Friday morning, Jan. 18, 2013 at the Christian Care Center after an extended illness.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Sammie Lee Holden, Sr. and Eddie Douglas Holden King and was preceded in death by his infant daughter Lori Lynnell Holden, brothers Sam Holden Jr., Jimmie Holden and Jackie Holden and sister Helen Jean Haynes. Mr. "G.W." or "Dub" was a longtime resident of Unionville in the Longview area. He served in the U.S. Army, retired from driving a truck for Yellow Freight in Nashville and later was employed at the Unionville Convenience Center. G.W. loved being in the country and was often found hunting, tending his garden or playing practical jokes. He was always willing to share his vegetables or laughs with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Nell Rogers Holden of Unionville, son, Byrom Rogers Holden and wife Lindy Feightner Holden of Warner Robins, Georgia, grandson, James Byrom Holden of Warner Robins; son Barry Brannon Holden of Unionville; sisters, Christine Boyce of El Paso, TX and Polly Scruggs of Murfreesboro, brother Gilbert Holden and wife Peggy Holden of Murfreesboro.
