UNIONVILLE -- Balanced scoring and a swarming defense keyed the Community Viqueens 48-40 win over Middle Tennessee Christian on Saturday night.

Hannah Busbee and Kristen Ray scored four points each and Davie Barnes hit a 3-pointer to guide the Purple and Gold to a 15-10 advantage after one period.

The Viqueen defense applied full court pressure coming out of the huddle and harassed the ill-equipped Lady Cougar ball handlers into numerous turnovers throughout the second frame allowing easy transition on the home side of the court.

Katie Leverette posted six points and Mercedes Huntley contributed three as Community (12-7, 6-4 9-A) raced out to a 30-15 advantage at the intermission.

The visitors managed to outscore the Viqueens by a small margin in the third quarter with the help of Megan Smith's 10 points but freshman point guard Sarah Pierce tallied seven to help post a 39-28 lead to begin the final period.

MTCS cut the lead to within just six points on two occasions in the fourth period but each time the Viqueens had answers. Leverette netted six and Ray scored on a pretty drive into the lane in the clutch to close out the win and season sweep of the district series.
