Mr. Paul H. Smith, 89, of Shelbyville died Tuesday, January 22nd, at Heritage Medical Center. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, World War II. After returning home from the war he farmed in Alachua, Florida. He eventually started working with and training horses. He had horse barns in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Illinois and Missouri. He was a member of the Walking Horse Breeders Association, a lifetime member of the Horse Training Association and served as a judge. He won many blue ribbons and trained many horses.

After 40 years in the horse industry he lost most of his sight and was in bad health. He retired, but never lost interest in the Horse World. He continued to have a garden and grow plenty of vegetables and beautiful flowers.

He was the son of the late Floyd Madison and Barcie Ann Jones Smith. He is survived by Lena Newell Smith of Shelbyville; two daughters, Patricia Ann (Samuel) Luckett of Ooltewah, Brenda Kay (Dan) Friar of Ringgold, Georgia; son, Kenneth Floyd (Linda) Smith of Chattanooga; two sisters, Kathleen O'Steen of High Springs, Florida, Floy Ann Gober of Arlington, Texas; brother, Fred I. (Martha Ann) Smith of Arlington, Texas; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild and three step-great-grandchildren.
