Fourth-ranked Columbia's Lady Lions jumped out to a 16-0 lead on the way to a 56-30 victory over host Shelbyville Central's Golden Eaglettes in a District 8-AAA match up on Friday night.
"We were just very timid handling the ball at the start of the game and they just took it to us and played extremely well in the first quarter. We didn't handle their full-court pressure and just didn't play aggressive enough," Shelbyville coach Kevin Thomas said.
"They had a player in Makayla Timmons that had as good of first quarter as I've seen by scoring 13 points. I don't know if she missed a shot."
The Lady Lions posted a 19-2 advantage at the end of the opening frame and increased the lead to 33-8 by halftime.
"We just didn't play well, especially in the first half. We had too many turnovers and didn't rebound at all," Thomas said.
"They scored a lot of points in transition and we didn't do a good job of getting back on defense."
The Eaglettes (10-13, 4-3 8-AAA) played a little better in the second half and slowed down Columbia's offense by switching defenses, while outscoring the Lady Lions 14-9 to cut the lead to 42-22
"We played a triangle and two zone and was able to slow them down a little bit. We just couldn't score enough on the other end," Thomas said. "Hopefully we'll learn from this one."
Aryanna Gilbert led the winners with 17 points while Timmons finished with 13 and Keianna Gilbert with 10.
Jameka Braden led the Eaglettes with eight points with To'Nesha Allison contributing seven.
Columbia scored 42 points in the paint compared to Shelbyville's 14.
The Eaglettes return to action on Friday at 6 in a district match up at Tullahoma.
