MANCHESTER -- It's been said that championships are won by defense.

If that's the case, Harris Middle's Golden Eaglettes are well on their way after claiming a 57-20 win over Tullahoma West in opening round action of the Central Tennessee Conference played at Coffee County Middle School on Monday evening.

The Eaglette defense only gave up four shots from the field, all in the first half, and only allowed two points in the second half, one free throw in each of the third and fourth quarters.

"It's been our defense that has carried us all season," Harris coach Misty Thompson said. "In the games we lost it was because we didn't play well on defense. A lot of our points come from our defensive pressure."

The game remained close until midway through the first quarter when the Eaglettes (13-3) began to pull away on the way to a 22-12 by the end of the period.

Harris outscored West 17-6 in the second stanza and posted a 29-18 advantage at halftime.

It was all the Eaglettes in the second half, outscoring their opponent 15-1 in the third to increase the lead to 49-19 going into the fourth quarter where coach Thompson cleared the bench midway through the final period.

Harris had a balanced scoring attack with Jenna Holt leading the way with 15 points, including nine in the first quarter. Erin Thompson, Romny Felts and Kenzie Hobbs each netted eight points apiece while Keely Smith followed with seven.

Skyanne Sheffield led West with a dozen points

"We really didn't play that well early in the game, but then we settled down and things go a lot better," Thompson said. "I was also pleased with the way our reserves played when they got into the game."

Harris faces Coffee County on Thursday night at 8 in the semifinals.

The Eagles open the tournament on Thursday at 6:30 against Coffee County.
