Both of the men in a truck that struck a tree on South Cannon Boulevard early Tuesday were taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Shelbyville police said.

Dusty Ray Hedstrom, 32, of Sinking Creek Road, the driver, was still in Vanderbilt's emergency room at mid-afternoon, Sgt. Mike Davis of the Shelbyville Police Department said.

A passenger, Alvin Daniel Crouch 33, of Hilltop Drive, was in stable condition in the trauma unit, according to Davis.

Preliminary investigation indicates Hedstrom may have fallen asleep at the wheel of the truck, police said.
