Thanks for support of Cancer Society programs

Dear Editor:

On behalf of cancer survivors, cancer caregivers, volunteers and the staff of your American Cancer Society, I would like to take this opportunity to say a personal thank you to the generous sponsors and donors that contributed to the success of our 2nd annual Rayz'n Cain For Relay Dance on Jan. 26.

As a staff-partner assisting with six Relay For Life's in five counties, I know that I have the best job in the world. The American Cancer Society has the greatest, most giving, most dedicated and hardest working volunteers of any non-profit organization. I consider myself a very lucky lady.

Because of the hard work of all the volunteers, the dance raised over $17,000.00 for your America Cancer Society to continue lifesaving research, programs and services. In the last fiscal year, the American Cancer Society has spent $8.5 million in Tennessee based research. Funding research at St. Judes Research Hospital, Vanderbilt Hospital, Vanderbilt Medical Center, UT Knoxville and UT Memphis, Center for Health Science.

Through Relay For Life and other special fundraising events, for the first time ever, the cancer death rate is DOWN 20 percent since the 1990s. This translates into more than 400 lives are being saved every day from cancer. This means that 400 more people are celebrating 400 more birthdays because of the dedication and hard work of our volunteers.

So with a debt of gratitude, a loving and caring heart, I want to humbly thank each and every volunteer and guest that attended our dance and I want them to know, they truly make a difference in the fight against cancer.
